General John Jack Pershing, was born on September 13, 1860, in Laclede Missouri.
He worked as a janitor with no education beyond highschool. After winning a contest to go to West Point for free, he rose through the ranks.
Pershing had no interest in the military. He wanted to be a lawyer, but he felt he couldn't to refuse an opportunity to obtain knowledge. Whether he liked it or not, he had potential and graduated from West Point as a 2nd lieutenant.
After being stationed in New Mexico Territory for several years, he became a West Point instructor. His cadets nicknamed him "Black Jack Pershing" because of his service with the 10th Calvary Regiment (the Buffalo Soldiers), Later Pershing was re-assigned to chasing down Pancho Villa.
Afterwards, he was promoted to General, where he served as the Commander of the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I.
After the Central Powers were defeated, General Pershing was promoted to "General of the United States Armies" in 1919, a rank only he and George Washington have every received.
